The Lady Roadrunners easily got past an overmatched Mogollon team Tuesday night at Muñoz Gym, defeating the Lady Mustangs 71-12.
After a slow start the Lady Birds broke open a 4-4 tie, quickly racing out to a 27-5 first period lead. Seven players scored in the quarter, led by Teyah Goldtooth with 8, including a pair of treys.
In the second Holbrook held a very young Mogollon team without a point while netting another 28 to lead 55-5 at the half. Brittany Baldwin hit two from distance and Sam Smith scored well inside with 5 in the quarter.
Kaynasa Curley, Dena Kinlicheenie and Sam Smith each netted a pair of field goals in the third, pushing the margin to 71-9.
In the fourth Holbrook attempted just a couple of shots, while trying to work on offensive sets, and failed to score, finishing the game with the large margin of victory.
“I’m not really sure how much we gained from a game like this,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “I was concerned that we would play to their level early, and had to call a time out to refocus things, but from that point on we played fairly well. It’s just really hard to gauge our performance in a contest like this. We know they have a struggling program right now, but we still needed to work on aspects of our own game to make us better for the rest of our schedule.
“I respect their girls for playing hard and not giving up, and wish them nothing but the best. I did think our girls handled the situation well in this game and showed a lot of class, which is a tribute to the type of players we have in this program. We will see them again next week, and we need to prepare accordingly.
“With the exception of our first win of the season against a good Coconino team, we haven’t faced a level of competition any where near the level of what lies ahead. Fortunately, at the Round Valley tournament this weekend I think we will see some very good teams,” the coach concluded.
All 10 of Holbrook’s dressed players scored in the game led by Goldtooth with 15 points. Samantha Smith and Summer Olney each netted 11, Curley had 10, Baldwin and Starla Smith, 6 each, Kinlicheenie and Shandie Demuth, 4 each, and Jessica Paz and Summer Charley, 2 each.
Holbrook made five three-point shots and went eight for 12 at the line. Mogollon had no treys and made four of 11 charity tosses.

Holbrook improved to 4-0 with the win. After facing St. Johns and Safford in the opening rounds of the Round Valley Shootout on Thursday, the Lady Birds will continue play in the tournament today and Saturday (Dec. 7 and 8). On Wednesday, Dec. 12, they will have a rematch with the Lady Mustangs in Heber.
