The Winslow Bulldogs won two games and lost two in the Pepsi Invitational Tournament held Dec. 6-8 in Flagstaff. The results left them with an 8-3 record for the season.
On Thursday, the Bulldogs fell to the Tucson Santa Rita Eagles, 50-46. The next day they defeated the Northland Prep Spartans, 50-41. On Saturday they defeated the River Valley Dust Devils, 53-46, but later lost the consolation bracket championship game to the Snowflake Lobos, 70-52.
In their opening game, the Bulldogs trailed the Santa Rita Eagles 13-9 after the first quarter and 26-21 at the half. The margin was still five points with the score at 36-31 after three quarters of play and the Eagles claimed the game, 50-46. Santa Rita only had six players score, but four of them were in double figures. Tracy Kit led the Eagles with 12 points, followed by Jeremiah Cardenas and T.J. Stoglin with 11 points each, and Corey Smith with 10. Winslow had nine players score, but none were in double figures. Stevin Nelson led the Bulldogs with nine points and Timmy Little added eight.
The Bulldogs picked up their first win Friday, defeating the Northland Prep Spartans, 50-41. The game was tied at 12-12 after the first quarter and Northland Prep led 22-21 at the half. The game was tied again at 34-34 after three quarters of play. Winslow outscored the Spartans 16-7 in the final period to secure the victory. Braxton Hibbert of Northland Prep led all scorers with 18 points. Winslow had 10 players score to only six for the Spartans. Michael Goldtooth led the Bulldogs with 11 points. Nelson was also in double figures for Winslow with 10 points. Jesi Bitsoi scored eight important points for Winslow, all in the crucial fourth quarter.
In their first game on Saturday, the Bulldogs defeated the River Valley Dust Devils, 53-46. River Valley led 10-6 after the first quarter, but Winslow rallied to lead 23-18 at the half. The Bulldogs continued in control and led 38-28 after three quarters of play. Goldtooth led all scorers with 19 points for the Bulldogs. Lukas Shirley was also in double figures for Winslow with 15 points. Ryan Wright led River Valley with 15 points.
In the consolation bracket championship game the Snowflake Lobos defeated the Bulldogs, 70-52. The Lobos led 14-8 after the first quarter and a commanding 49-16 at the half. The Bulldogs cut into the lead, but still trailed by a substantial 48-32 margin after three quarters of play. Reggie Peterson of Snowflake led all scorers with 20 points. Chase Walden was also in double figures for the Lobos with 16 points and Rick Shumway had nine points for the victors. Goldtooth led Winslow with 18 points. Shirley was also in double figures for the Bulldogs with 10 points and Keenan Keams tallied eight points for Winslow. Both benches got into the scoring column, as 10 Lobos and nine Bulldogs scored.
Winslow was slated to host the Blue Ridge Yellowjackets on Tuesday and will host the Page Sand Devils on Tuesday, Dec. 18.
