The Winslow Lady Bulldogs won one game and lost two at the Gallup Invitational Tournament last week. The Lady Bulldogs defeated the St. Pius Lady Spartans on Thursday, but lost to the Clovis Lady Wildcats, eventual tournament champions, on Friday, and the Gallup Miramura Lady Patriots on Saturday. Clovis defeated the hosting Gallup Lady Bengals 65-42 for the championship. The results left the Lady Bulldogs with a 4-2 record for the young season.
The Lady Bulldogs earned a 60-40 win over the St. Pius Lady Spartans in their first game of the tournament. Win-slow led 16-12 after the first quarter, but trailed 24-22 at the intermission. The Lady Bulldogs were back on top 36-31 after three quarters of play. Mattea Begaii led all scorers with 12 points. Marcella Joe and Shandiin Armao added 11 points each for the Lady Bulldogs. Natalie Zamora led St. Pius with 10 points.
The Clovis Lady Wildcats topped the Lady Bulldogs 72-48 on their march to a championship in Winslow’s second game of the tournament. Clovis led 17-10 after the first quarter and a commanding 39-21 at the half. The Lady Wildcats were on top 54-29 entering the final period. Danni Wilbanks of Clovis led all scorers with 26 points. Carrie Sharp with 15 points and Niki Cordova with 10 were also in double figures for the Lady Wildcats. Mattea Begaii led Winslow with 14 points. Shandiin Armao added 12 points.
The Gallup Miramura Lady Patriots defeated the Lady Bulldogs 48-38 in their final game. Miramura had a 13-10 first quarter lead, but Winslow stormed back to tie the game at 25-25 at the half. A low scoring third quarter saw the Lady Patriots take a 33-28 lead into the final period. Shandiin Armao was the only Lady Bulldog in double figures with 16 points.
Winslow will host the defending state champion Page Lady Sand Devils on Tuesday, Dec. 18. After that, they will host the Winslow Winter Classic on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 21 and 22, for their last action in 2012.
