The Roadrunners dropped both games played last week losing a close battle to Mogollon at Heber on Wednesday, then getting soundly beaten by Blue Ridge on Friday.
In their first meeting with the Mustangs, Holbrook was able to keep the pesky Mogollon team at arms length in an eight-point win. This time around it was the Mustangs who held a four-point halftime lead. If not for a trio of three-point shots from Kyle Chee in the third quarter, Holbrook would have been even further down than seven heading to the fourth. In a high scoring final period Holbrook poured in 29 points trying to rally from behind, but Mogollon netted 27 to pull out the 75-70 win.
Chee led Holbrook with 19 points. Dontae Hollins added 16, Sheldon Silversmith, 8, Andon Hatch, 6, Tris-ton Zahne and Nathan Turley, 4 each, Miireux Begaii, 2, and Marlin Martin, 1.
Holbrook made seven of 12 charity tosses, with all seven makes coming in the fourth period. The Mustangs made the most of their free throw opportunities, converting 24 of their 37 attempts.
Holbrook 14 8 19 29 70
Mogollon 13 13 22 27 75
Facing Blue Ridge on Friday night in Lakeside the Roadrunners stayed close early, trailing by just three at the close of the first and by nine at the half. But in the second half the Yellowjackets pulled away to a comfort-able 72-43 win. The third period was Holbrook’s undoing as the Birds netted just six points while giving up 18 to the Jackets.
Holbrook was led by Chee with 11 points. Turley added 10, Hollins, 7, Begaii, 5, Zahne, 4, and Brandon Bitsui, Bryan Tisi and Robert Nelson, 2 each.
Holbrook made 15 of 17 charity tosses.
The Roadruners will play at St. Johns on Friday, Dec. 21, in their final game before Christmas. They will play in the Tournament of Champions scheduled Dec. 27-29 in Chinle. They return to regular season play on Jan. 5 with a trip face to rival Winslow.
Holbrook headed into this week’s action with an overall mark of 7-7.
