Holbrook’s wrestlers completed a busy week by placing third as a team at the Show Low Dual Tournament held Dec. 14 and 15, defeating the hosting Cougars 45-33 in the third/fourth place match.
The wrestling team was in St. Johns Dec. 13 for a five-way multiple meet, where the Roadrunners went 2-2 as a team with wins over Thatcher, 42-30, and Valley, 72-6, and losses to St. Johns, 50-29, and Show Low, 43-36.
At the dual meet the Roadrunners faced seven teams. They earned wins over Blue Ridge, 46-34, Alchesay, 66-18, River Valley, 72-12, Winslow, 45-31, Mogollon, 57-21, and Show Low, 45-33. Their lone loss was to St. Johns, 40-33.
Individually, seven Holbrook wrestlers placed led by Shem Bowman, who was first with a 9-0 re-cord. Caleb McClellan was second at 8-1. Theron Johns also went 8-1, finishing third. Nikko Ferniza went 7-2 and placed second. Levi McClellan was fourth with a 7-2 mark. Clayton Hunt went 4-5 to finish fourth. CJ Plumb also finished fourth with a record of 6-3.
Those wrestling, but not placing were Sam Plumb, 3-4, James Ramirez, 2-5, Michael McMonigal, 4-3, Jedde Bowman, 3-4, Joseph Herrera, 3-4, Kevin Self, 3-4 and Mathew Gishi, 3-4.
“The only match we lost was to St. Johns. They ended up winning the dual meet tournament,” said Coach John Bokker.
“The guys have made great improvement. We defeated Show Low, who we lost to earlier in the year. Our St. Johns match was very close, coming down to the wire in a couple matches where we were defeated handily earlier in the season. I am happy with our performance even though I know we could have done even better. I am looking forward to the second half of our season!”
