Robert E. “Bob, Cheney Sr., 83, went to spend his first Christmas in Heaven on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, at the Holbrook Cemetery.
Bob was born in Wainwright, Mo., on Oct. 12, 1929, to George and Elfie Cheney. As a child, he and his family lived in several states before moving to Holbrook in 1946.
Uncle Sam called him to duty in 1950, and he served in the U.S. Army as a corporal in Korea then, in 1974, he joined the Army National Guard as Sgt. Cheney.
Bob married his soulmate, Rachel in 1953, and together they had seven beautiful children.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 37, where he served as a past commander and member of the Color Guard, the VFW and the Elks.
Bob retired in 1989 from the Arizona Department of Transportation and the Army National Guard (he loved his country and the military).
He loved to fish, hunt, camp, baseball, play pool and lots of casino time. He will be greatly missed by all.
Survivors include his companion, Rachel; three daughters, Rosalie Fischer (Don) of Holbrook, Victoria Salmons of Fulton, Mo., and Nancy Canada (Wil) of Phoenix; three sons, Robert E. Cheney Jr. and David Cheney, both of Holbrook, and Tim Cheney of Mesa; a brother, Harold Cheney of Tennessee; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Elfie Cheney; his son, Richard Cheney; three sisters; and five brothers.
Owens Livingston Mortuary of Holbrook was in charge of the arrangements.
