Fred L. Jones, 74, entered eternal rest peacefully on Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, after a long battle with illness.
Fred was born to Althea B. and Hubert Jones on Aug. 30, 1938, in Sheffield, Alabama.
He was a veteran, serving from September 13, 1955, to September 12, 1961, as an erecting machinist in the U.S. Navy.
Most of his adult life he lived in Yuma, where he owned and operated several service stations over a 30-year period.
For his retirement years he relocated to the Cedar Hills, east of Snowflake.
Fred was an avid fan of college sports, loved tending his orchard, and enjoyed landscaping, fishing and camping. He knew his way around the kitchen as long as there was cast iron cookware. He was also a master griller come rain, hail, sleet or snow.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Susan; one daughter from a previous marriage, Lee Ann Ward, her husband, Trevor, and their two children, Chuck and Rebecca; three sisters, Sandy Tennison, Sherry Surdock, and Patricia Gail Dail and her husband, Rick; one special uncle, Sam Jones; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Kathy Dillon.
Silver Creek Mortuary of Taylor was in charge of the arrangements.
