The top ranked Window Rock Lady Scouts cruised past a cold shooting Holbrook Lady Roadrunner squad 59-31 in the first round of the Tournament of Champions last Thursday in Chinle.
The Lady Birds didn’t have a single quarter in which they made more than five field goals, with just one basket in the second and only two in the fourth. They shot just 20 percent from the field for the game, which included making only six of 27 shots in the paint.
“Obviously, any time you shoot that kind of percentage, I don’t care who you play, your chances of win-ning are slim. When you play a top three team like Window Rock you get the type of outcome we did in this game,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “If there is any good news, we were able to get good looks at the basket for most of our shots, we just couldn’t find the range. We also had 28 turnovers, but did force them into nearly 20 turnovers.
“A season as long as ours is full of peaks and valleys, hopefully, this will be our largest valley to climb out of. We face them in a counting regular season game in a couple of weeks and will certainly need to perform better to have a chance,” the coach concluded.
None of the Lady Roadrunners finished the game in double figures in scoring. Teyah Goldtooth led the team with 9, Kaynasa Curley had 6, Mariah Cummings, 5, Samantha Smith, 4, Summer Olney, Starla Smith and Shandie Demuth, 2 each, and Marissa Williams, 1. Holbrook made just five three-point attempts and only went to the line four times, making two.
Window Rock was led by Aspen Shepard with 15 points.

With the loss Holbrook fell to 15-3 on the season. After playing two more games at the tournament, the Lady Birds had a week to prepare for a brutal stretch in the New Year. They travel to Winslow on Saturday, Jan. 5, then play at Joseph City on Tuesday, Jan. 8. They will be at home again on Thursday, Jan. 10, when they host the Lady Scouts and again the following night when Valley Sanders, another top three team, comes to Muñoz Gym.
