The Lobos earned a split in their first two games of 2013, falling on the road at Payson, then picking up a home court win over Winslow.
Facing the Longhorns Jan. 3, both teams played well through the first eight minutes, but Payson held a two-point edge. By halftime the Lobos had built a five-point lead, thanks to another solid offensive pe-riod. Just 14 points in the third allowed Payson to pull within one heading to the fourth. In the final period, the Longhorns caught fire from the perimeter, scoring 25 points to defeat Snowflake 79-69.
“Reggie (Peterson) picked up his fourth foul just one minute into the second half, and we had a tough time keeping up with their outside shooting in the fourth,” said Coach Andy Wood.
Despite the foul problems, Petersen, Dallin Merrell and Rick Shumway each netted 14 in the loss. Chase Walden finished with 12, Doug Brimhall, 7, Derek Fusselman, 4, and Keegan Kay and Braccin Tanner, 2 each.
Hosting Winslow the following night Petersen stayed out of foul trouble, piling up 15 points with 14 re-bounds to lead the Lobos to a 65-54 win. Shumway added 13, Walden, 10, Brimhall, 7, Tanner, 6, Trent Caldwell, 5, Merrell, 4, Kay, 3, and Dallin Fusselman, 2.
Snowflake headed into a three-game week with an overall mark of 11-5. After playing at Cibecue on Tuesday, the Lobos will host the Alchesay Falcons on Friday, Jan. 11, and the Show Low Cougars on Satur-day, Jan. 12. On Tuesday, Jan. 15, they turn around and face the Falcons in Whiteriver.
