Holbrook’s wrestlers were in Window Rock Jan. 9 for a five-team dual and the Roadrunners came away with four lopsided victories. Holbrook defeated the host team 57-24, took care of Red Mesa 69-12, handed Monument Valley a 60-18 loss, then finished up with a 66-18 win over Grants, N.M.
Individually Theron Johns, Levi McClellan, Caleb McClellan, James Ramirez, Michael McMonigal, Nikko Ferniza and Shem Bowman each went 4-0. Mac Stump, Joseph Herrera, Clayton Hunt and CJ Plumb went 3-1. Christian Young and Mathew Gishi were 2-2. Jedde Bowman failed to win a match, going 0-4.
Competing at the Doc Wright meet held on Jan. 11 and 12 in Winslow, Holbrook came away with two first place winners and finished sixth as a team.
Theron Johns and Shem Bowman each claimed the top spot in their respective weight classes, going 4-0. CJ Plumb took fourth with a 3-2 record. Clayton Hunt was 4-2, placing fifth. Nikko Ferniza went 1-3 and placed sixth. Levi McClellan was 2-3, also placing sixth.
Those competing, but not placing, were Sam Plumb, 0-2; Caleb McClellan, 1-2; James Ramirez, 2-2; Michael McMonigal, 1-2; Jedde Bowman, 0-2; Kevin Self, 1-2; and Mathew Gishi, 0-2.
“There were some very tough wrestlers at the Doc Wright tournament,” said Coach John Bokker.
“The finals matches were very exciting. Theron and Shem put on quite a performance. Theron either pinned his guys or beat them by 15 points (teched) them. Shem dominated all his opponents. His closest match was a seven-point victory.
“CJ, Clayton, Levi and Nikko all did an outstanding job placing in the tournament,” noted the coach.
