The Lady Roadrunners easily took care of business against visiting St. Johns Tuesday night in a game they needed for power point standings.
After a bit of a sluggish start through the first couple of minutes, the Holbrook squad began heating up from outside the arc and clamped down on the defensive end of the floor. That combination led to a 19-7 first quarter lead. In the second Brittany Baldwin connected on four treys and Teyah Goldtooth added another two, helping the Lady Birds move out to a commanding 41-9 halftime lead.
In the second half Holbrook focused on trying to get the ball inside, where Shandie Demuth and Samantha Smith netted seven second half points, giving the Lady Birds a comfortable 53-15 final outcome.
“We played well after the first couple of minutes. Brittany and Teyah found their touch from the outside and we got several steals with our defense early,” noted Coach Greg Perkins. “In the second half, we tried to work on our inside game, but still play well defensively to maintain our lead and get the win. Hopefully, we can continue to shoot the ball that well as we head into the post-season.”
Baldwin finished with 20 points, including six three-point bombs. Goldtooth added 16, Samantha Smith, 6, Demuth, 5, and Col’Bi Nez, Starla Smith and Summer Charley, 2 each. Holbrook made a total of nine three-point shots and converted eight of 12 free throw attempts.
St. Johns was led by Savannah Brown and Analee Thompson with 4 each. Cambria Whiting, Abbie Waite, and Trysta Meyer each scored 2, and Anansa Garcia, 1. The Lady Redskins made three of nine charity tosses.

With the win Holbrook improved to 20-9 on the season. Depending on the outcome of the Lady Birds’ game with Chinle tonight (Feb. 1), they will either be playing in the sectional tournament next week or will have time off to prepare for the state tournament, which gets underway in two weeks. They have put them-selves in a position where they will either get a first round bye or will host a first round game in the state tournament.
Tonight is also Senior Night, and seniors Jessica Paz, Brittany Baldwin, Kaynasa Curley, Samantha Smith, Col’Bi Nez, Starla Smith, Latanya Kinlicheenie, Heather Dudley and Tatyana Chase will be honored following their game with the Lady Wildcats.
