The Wildcats of Joseph City head into the sectional tournament today (Feb. 6) most likely needing to win at least two games there to keep their state tournament hopes alive.
The Cats dropped all three games played last week, suffering losses to Snowflake, Round Valley and Valley Sanders.
Tuesday at Snowflake the Wildcats were outmatched size wise and couldn’t buy a bucket from the perimeter, connecting on just one of 17 three-point attempts in a 64-38 loss.
Jacob Fields led the team with 16 points. Austin Bushman added 7, Cody Davis, 6, Jaden Parra, 5, and Wyatt Johnson, 4.
A 73-61 home court loss to Round Valley on Thursday was followed up with a 57-50 road loss at Valley Sanders in Friday’s regular season finale.
In the Valley game Fields again led the Cats with 19. Johnson added 10 with two treys, Parra hit 8, Chance Rush, 6, Bushman, 5, and Davis, 2.
The Wildcats finished the regular season with an overall mark of 9-20, but qualified for the sectional tournament, which begins today at Flagstaff High School, where the Cats will meet up with top ranked El Capitan. The Wildcats need to win this game to have any hope of advancing to the state tournament, as they are not currently in the top 24 of the power point rankings for Division IV. With a win they would face either Rock Point or Northland Prep in a semifinal game on Friday, Feb. 8, also at FHS. A loss today will bring their season to a close.
