Holbrook’s Lady Roadrunners dropped their first opportunity in the basketball post-season, losing to top ranked Valley Sanders for the third time this season by a final of 65-47 in the first round of the sectional tournament played in Winslow Tuesday night.
Both teams played tough through the first eight minutes with Valley holding a 14-11 edge. After the Lady Roadrunners tied it at 14-14 early in the second, Valley went on an 11-0 run and led by nine at the half. In the third quarter Holbrook came out well, trimming the lead to two points before giving up three consecutive fast break points to the Lady Pirates. From that point on Valley gradually pulled away to advance to the second round of sectionals scheduled today and Saturday (Feb. 8 and 9) in Chinle.
Holbrook will now play in the opening round of the state tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 13. If the Lady Birds remain in the top 16 in the power point rankings they will host that game; if not, they will play that first round game on the road at a site yet to be determined.
“With sectional games counting for power points, we really won’t know who or where we are playing until Sunday afternoon. Hopefully, we can get a first round home game. We know we are in the state tournament and beginning Wednesday, it is single elimination for all 24 teams,” said Coach Greg Perkins.
“As for the Valley game, we played hard and had chances to pull even, but they are a very good team, and good teams take advantage of mistakes made by others. Valley certainly did that to us and deserved to advance. Next week is when it all matters.”
Teyah Goldtooth led Holbrook with 9 points. Mariah Cummings added 7, Brittany Baldwin and Col’Bi Nez, 6 each, Summer Charley and Kaynasa Curley, 4 each, Samantha Smith and Jessica Paz, 3 each, and Summer Olney and Starla Smith, 2 each. Holbrook made five three-point shots and went nine for 16 at the line.
Valley made four three-point shots and went five for eight at the charity stripe.
