The Winslow High School Speech and Debate Team enjoyed success at the 14th annual Bobcat Bonanza held Feb. 1 and 2 at Central High School in Phoenix.
Five Winslow competitors reached the finals round of competition. The duet acting team of Brittany Fischer and Emmett Foster were runner-up champions, taking home a second place award. The duet acting team of Mardo Lewis and Nathaniel Renney ranked fifth in the competition. Katelyn Parrish also placed in finals, taking a fifth place award for Poetry.
Two WHS students reached the semifinals, Emmett Foster in Dramatic Interpretation and Allen Messer in Expository Speaking.
The entire team ranked in the top 50 percent of entries and six of the Winslow competitors were in the top 20 percent.
The team is coached by Sarah Smithson and Marianne Richardson, with help from volunteers John Maine, Jean Glenn, Chris Card and R.C. Brown.
More than 800 students representing more than 40 schools from Arizona and California participated in the tournament.
