After earning a bye in the first round of the Division III State Basketball Tournament, the Lobos showed no signs of rust with a 66-43 rout of Morenci in round two.
Facing 20th seeded Morenci, the fourth ranked Snowflake squad moved on top quickly, gaining a 10-point edge through the first eight minutes. By halftime the Lobos’ lead had expanded to 35-19. They closed out the fourth period with a 14-8 run, moving them into the quarterfinal round in Prescott Valley on Monday morning.
Rick Shumway led the way for the Lobos, netting 22 points. Chase Walden added 15 with nine steals. Reggie Peterson hit for 6 and controlled the boards with 10 rebounds. Keegan Kay and Braccin Tanner added 6 points each. Dallin Fusselman and Doug Brimhall had 4 each, and Dallin Merrell finished with 2. The Lobos shot the ball well, hitting 56 percent from the field. They collected 16 steals, but had 17 turnovers.
If the Lobos were able to get past Fountain Hills, they would advance to the final four to face either Show Low or Valley Christian in the one of two semifinal games scheduled Friday night, Feb. 22, in Jobbing.com Arena in Glendale.
The four teams vying for the other two spots from the bottom of the bracket include Estrella Foothills, Scottsdale Christian, Cortez, and defending champion and heavy favorite Gilbert Christian.
