Results of the City of Winslow’s curbside recycling survey show that many of citizens are not aware of the bulk pickup services provided by Waste Management in its contract with the city.
Of the 176 responses to the survey, 147 noted that they had never used the service and most of those who offered a written comment said that they were not aware of the service. A number of those surveyed suggested that the best thing the city could do to improve that service is make the public aware of it.
Waste Management will schedule a Wednesday pickup of bulky items. If such service is needed, call the city finance department office at 289-5533.
Persons making the call should be prepared to place the bulky article at their curb the Wednesday following scheduling. Items may include washers, driers, couches, easy chairs and other such bulky items. If the article is a refrigerator, it must have the Freon removed, as that cannot be transported.
Each pickup service is limited to one such item per residence.
Another service for Winslow residents is provided at the transfer station north of town. Residents may take trash to the transfer station from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The transfer station will be closed on all city holidays.
There is no charge for Winslow residents to use the transfer station, but they must show proof of residence. Non-residents may use the transfer station for a fee of $10 for a pickup load. Larger loads will be assessed larger payments.
Another Waste Management service some were not aware of was the replacement of damaged toters. If a toter has been cracked, lost wheels or had most other malfunctions, the resident can get it replaced by calling the city finance office at 289-5533. The replacements will also be done on Wednesdays.
There may be times when bulk pickups or toter replacements are so numerous that the service will also be done on Thursday.
