The Lady Bulldogs softball team began the 2013 season with an easy 18-0 win over the Hopi Lady Bruins last Friday in Winslow. Richelyn Villanueva worked the full five innings of the game, which was shortened due to the 10-run mercy rule. She did not allow a hit or a walk, holding Hopi without a baserunner. She fanned six batters.
Winslow scored four runs in the first inning on a home run by Taylor Baca, singles by Jalisa Hayes and Jamie Bollin, two errors and a walk. The lead increased to 6-0 in the second inning on a double by Baca, a walk and an error.
The margin grew to 11-0 in the bottom of the third on singles by Hayes and Bollin, a double by Villanueva, a triple by Jolisa Jones and two Hopi errors.
Eight runs in the bottom of the fourth insured that the game would end unless Hopi scored at least nine runs in the top of the fifth. Singles by Jones, Elizabeth Lozano, Dallas Zamora and Hayes, a double by Bollin, a home run by Villanueva, a hit batter and two Hopi errors figured in the scoring.
Hayes and Bollin were both three for four for the game. Villanueva, Baca and Jones were two for three. Lozano was one for three and Alyssa Smith was one for four.
The Bulldogs will play at Snowflake on Friday, March 8, and at Holbrook on Wednesday, March 13, before going to a tournament scheduled March 15 and 16 in Bloomfield, N.M.
