The Winslow Bulldogs started their 2013 baseball season at the Fountain Hills Invitational Tournament where they won one game, lost two and tied one. The Bulldogs lost to Bourgade Catholic 5-4 in their first game on Thursday, pounded Northwest Christian 13-2 in their second game, lost to Payson 10-2 and tied 6-6 with Camp Verde in their final game.
In the 5-4 loss to Bourgade Catholic, both teams scored a run in the first inning, Bourgade’s on a walk, a stolen base and two wild pitches. Winslow scored on a single by Jeff Gonzales and a double by Colton Corum. Bourgade took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth on a walk and a double. Winslow tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a walk, a stolen base, a passed ball and an error. Bourgade scored three in the top of the sixth for a 5-2 lead on three walks, a single and a double. Winslow cut the margin to 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth on a double by Matt Cirre and an error. The Bulldogs scored in the bottom of the seventh on a hit batsman, a stolen base, an error and singles by Cirre and Vincenzio Sells, but left the potential tying and winning runs on base.
Jon Bollin and Adrian Montoya worked the mound for the Bulldogs, with Montoya taking the loss. Cirre led the Bulldogs at the plate with a three for three day. Sells was two for three, Gonzales was one for three, and Montoya and Corum were both one for four.
In the 13-2 win over Northwest Christian, Kuster Kinlicheenie worked all five innings for the victory. Winslow scored two runs in each of the first two innings while Northwest Christian scored one in the second inning and one in the third. Winslow got two runs in the fourth inning and seven in the fifth for the victory.
Gonzales, Cirre and Corum were all two for three, Bollin and Sam Setalla were one for two, and Akkeem Foster was one for three.
In the 10-2 loss to Payson on Friday, Corum, Matthew Ramos and Cirre pitched, with Ramos taking the loss. Payson scored one in the first, two in the second, three each in the fourth and fifth innings, and one in the sixth. Winslow got both of its runs in the sixth inning. Setalla was one for one and Montoya was one for three for all of Winslow’s hits.
In the final game on Saturday, the Bulldogs tied the Camp Verde Cowboys 6-6 in six innings. Setalla and Cirre pitched for the Bulldogs. Winslow scored four times in the first inning, while Camp Verde scored twice. Both teams scored once in the third inning, then Camp Verde scored twice and Winslow once in the fourth inning. Camp Verde tied the game in the fifth inning.
Setalla was two for two against Camp Verde. Corum was three for four. Cirre was two for four. Sells and Rey Chavez-Velez were both one for three.
