The Winslow Lady Bulldogs softball team is off to a good start under new coach Kelly Fifelski, winning their second and third games of the young season last week over Holbrook and Flagstaff.
Winslow took a 5-0 lead over visiting Holbrook Feb. 28 in the bottom of the first inning on singles by Halle Hayes, Renee Bollin, Jamie Bollin and Jolisa Jones, a double by Alyssa Smith, a walk and a hit batsman. Holbrook cut the margin to 5-1 in the top of the second on a home run by Kylah Spangler.
The Lady Bulldogs upped the margin to 8-1 in the bottom on the second on a walk, a hit batsman and a double by Taylor Baca. Holbrook scored in the top of the third on a walk and a single by A. Foster to cut the lead to 8-2. Winslow increased the margin to 9-2 in the bottom of the third on an error and a single by Renee Bollin.
A five-run bottom of the fourth inning gave the Lady Bulldogs a 14-2 lead on three walks and doubles by Halle Hayes, Jamie Bollin and Richelyn Villanueva. That put the mercy rule into effect and when Holbrook only scored once in the top of the fifth, the 10-run lead allowed the game to be terminated with the final at 14-3. The Lady Roadrunners’ last run came on a walk, a hit batsman and a single by T. Hooker.
Baca worked the first three innings and got the win, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Villanueva worked the last two innings and allowed one run on two hits and a hit batsman. She fanned three batters.
Villanueva was one for one at the plate. Halle Hayes and Renee Bollin were each two for two, with Hayes having a double. Jamie Bollin was two for four with a double. Jones was one for two. Baca and Alyssa Smith were each one for three with a double.
The Lady Bulldogs edged the Flagstaff Lady Eagles 7-6 in a game played Feb. 27 in Winslow.
Villanueva got the win in relief of Halle Hayes. It was her second win of the young season. Hayes worked the first five innings, allowing two runs on just two hits and five walks while fanning seven. Villanueva allowed four runs on four hits and a walk in two innings with one strikeout.
Winslow took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on singles by Halle and Jaleisa Hayes, and two Flagstaff errors. The margin grew to 4-0 in the bottom of the third on an error and a single by Baca.
Flagstaff cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fourth inning on two walks and a double by LeAnn Hernandez. Winslow increased the margin to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning on a home run by Renee Bollin.
Flagstaff had a huge sixth inning, scoring four times and taking a 6-5 lead. The Lady Eagles had singles by Kasten Padilla, Emylen Merit, Irene Hernandez and Emileen Nez, as well as a walk.
Winslow won the game in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh on a double by Hailee Branson, a triple by Halle Hayes and a game winning single by Renee Bollin.
Branson was one for one with a double. Jaleisa Hayes was two for three. Halle Hayes was two for four with a triple. Jones was one for two. Renee Bollin was one for three with a home run. Baca and Dallas Zamora were each one for three.
Winslow is slated to play the Lady Lobos in Snowflake on Friday, March 8, and the Lady Roadrunners again at Holbrook on Wednesday, March 13. They will be at the Bloomfield Invitational Tournament on March 15 and 16, in Bloomfield, N.M.
