Shelia Young, 47, and husband Deane Young, 47, of Heber-Overgaard were found guilty by a jury Feb. 21 of conspiring to defraud the United States and 10 counts of submitting false claims for tax refunds.
The jury trial for Kennith Lee Defoor, 70, also of Heber-Overgaard, on the same charges has been continued to 9 a.m. on May 14. Sheila Young is Defoor’s daughter.
The three owned and operated Accurate Consulting LLC, an accounting and tax preparation business in Heber-Overgaard.
The indictments identified 122 fraudulent tax returns that the Youngs and Defoor filed with the Internal Revenue Service for tax year 2008 that claimed inflated refund amounts ranging from $12,405 to $368,102 per return. In total, the defendants claimed more than $9.5 million in fraudulent refunds, and charged their clients up to 10 percent of the fraudulent refund amount as their fee, contingent on the IRS paying out the false claim.
The indictment stated Deane James Young represented himself to be a certified public accountant. The Arizona State Board of Accountancy was contacted and showed no record of there ever being anyone by that name certified as an accountant by the State of Arizona.
The Youngs will be sentenced by Judge Campbell on May 20.
