The Winslow High School speech and debate team brought home state championship medals in Duet Acting and Dramatic Interpretation from the Arizona Interscholastic Association State Speech Tournament held March 15 and 16 at River Valley High School in Mojave Valley.
Emmett Foster and Brittany Fischer took first place in Duet Acting, and Emmett also earned the state championship in Dramatic Interpretation. Emmett, a WHS senior, was ranked fourth in Sweepstakes Points competing with students from 1A-3A schools from throughout the state.
Mardo Lewis and Nathaniel Renney were runner-up champions in Duet Acting, taking second place. Kaylee Smith placed third in both Original Oratory and Prose. Allen Messer was fifth in Expository Speaking and sixth in Impromtu. Seth Jennings earned fifth in Dramatic Interpretation. Katelyn Parrish placed fifth in Poetry, and Luke McCauley was sixth in Dramatic Interpretation.
Ten performers reached semifinals in the competition. Taking seventh place in their competitions were Luke McCauley, Humor; and Katelyn Parrish, Prose. Eighth place awards went to Clinton Contreras, Dramatic Interpretation; Daniel Lane and Nathaniel Renney, Duo-Interpretation; Ashley McLaws in both Prose and Poetry; and Lexi Sievers, Original Oratory. Brittany Fischer placed ninth in Dramatic Interpretation. In Humor, 12th place went to Daniel Lane and 14th place to David Messer.
Sarah Smithson and Marianne Richardson coach the WHS Speech Team, with volunteer assistance from Chris Card, Jean Glenn, John Maine, Laurel Palmer and Zach Young.
