Carl Robert Cole, 86, passed from this life on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at his home in Taylor. Visitations will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 29, at Silver Creek Mortuary in Taylor and at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, at the Love Lake Road Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Taylor, with the funeral service following at 11 a.m.
He was born May 21, 1926, in Whittier, Calif. His parents were William Rollie and Grace Cole.
Carl spent his growing up years in Phoenix. He graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1944, and on his 18th birthday, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served during World War II in the Pacific on the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill. On May 7, 1945, during the battle of Iwo Jima, the Bunker Hill was hit by two Japanese Kamikazes, and 300 men were killed and 300 wounded.
After the war he served a three-year mission for the LDS church in Argentina. In 1950 he enrolled at Arizona State University in Tempe and received a Bachelor of Education degree. Later he received his master’s degree from Northern Arizona University.
While attending ASU, he met Shirley Shumway. Later they were married on March 22, 1951, and they settled in Taylor. He began his teaching career in the Snowflake and Taylor schools as a teacher and administrator for 35 years.
He spent many years in church service, on the Taylor City council, as an EMT on the Taylor volunteer fire and ambulance service, and as a Boy Scouts of America leader, receiving the Silver Beaver Award.
He always had a great love for music, directing and singing in many choirs and choruses, as well as being an actor and soloist in local theatrical productions.
Along with his wife Shirley he served three missions for the LDS church in Spain, Texas and Bolivia.
During their marriage of 62 years they became the parents of 11 children, 43 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Shirley; children Ann Chaffee (David) of Mesa, Bob (Donna) of Seguin, Texas, Linda Butler (Jay) of Douglas, Wyo., James (Gale) of Buffalo, Wyo., Michael (Lynette) of Taylor, Becky Holt (Tim) of Mesa, Cecelia Edwards (Clark) of West Jordan, Utah, Viviane Bassett (Brett) of Lacy, Wash., Charles (Patricia) of Cape Coral, Fla., Scott (Shauna) of Queen Creek; and one sister Elberta Tatum of Sun City West.
