After falling as far as number six in power points following their first two losses of the season, the Lady Bulldogs of Winslow bounced back with three wins last week and moved back up to the number three seed for the state tournament, which begins on Thursday, May 2.
Winslow defeated Show Low 6-2 on Monday afternoon after trailing 2-1 through the first two innings. The Bulldogs took the lead for good with three fourth inning runs.
A two-hit performance from Richelyn Villanueva in the circle was more than enough for the win. She faced 26 batters, giving up just two runs, neither earned, on two hits. She also had a strikeout and two walks.
At the plate, Dallas Zamora went zero for three with an RBI. Halle Hayes was one for three and scored a run. Taylor Baca went four for four with an RBI. Villanueva walked once and scored a run. Megan Lymer went one for four, scoring once. Renee Bollin was one for two and scored once. Jaleisa Hayes scored once. Jolisa Jones was two for three. Jamie Bollin went zero for two, but walked and scored once.
Tuesday’s game at Coconino gave the Bulldogs a chance to avenge one of their two previous losses. Two scoreless innings gave way to an explosive third inning for Winslow as the Bulldogs pushed across nine runs to build a big lead. Those nine weren’t enough to seal the win, though. Coconino battled back to trail just 12-10 heading into the seventh. In the top of the final inning Winslow scored five runs to put the game away and secure the 17-12 win.
Halle Hayes faced 41 Panther batters through seven innings of work. She gave up the 12 runs, 10 earned, on 15 hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
At the plate, Zamora went two for five with a double and an RBI. Halle Hayes helped herself, going four for five with a triple, an RBI and scored four runs. Baca went three for five with three RBIs and scored three runs. Alyssa Smith was two for five with an RBI and scored once. Lymer went one for two with a triple, three RBIs and scored once. Renee Bollin was four for four with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Jaleisa Hayes went one for five, reached once on an error, had one RBI and scored two runs. Jamie Bollin was one for three, walked twice and scored three runs.
Wednesday’s season finale resulted in a closer than expected 7-2 win at Chinle.
Winslow led 4-1 through three innings, but really didn’t control the game until the fifth when the Bulldogs padded their lead with five more runs.
Baca worked the first five innings, facing 21 Wildcat batters. She gave up one earned run on six hits with seven strikeouts. Ceyanne Benally pitched the final two innings, facing nine batters. She gave up one unearned run on three hits with two strikeouts.
Zamora went two for two with a triple, two RBIs and scored once. Halle Hayes went one for four with an RBI and scored once. Baca was three for four with two RBIs. Hailee Branson went zero for one, but walked and scored once. Villanueva went one for four and scored once. Smith was two for three, scoring twice. Lymer went one for two and scored once. Renee Bollin was two for three with a double, an RBI and scored twice. Jamie Bollin went one for three with a double and an RBI.
As the third seed, the Bulldogs will get a first round bye when the state tournament begins on Thursday. They will face either No. 19 Coolidge or No. 14 Bourgade Catholic in an 8 p.m. game on Friday, May 3, at the Rose Mofford Softball Complex in Phoenix. A second round win would move them into the quarterfinal round on Saturday, where they would most like match up with sixth seeded Mingus Union in an 11:30 a.m. game.
