Holbrook’s baseball season came to a close in the opening round of the Division III state tournament Tuesday evening with a first round, 10-8 loss to Morenci.
The Roadrunners, who were seeded 22nd, fell behind early as the 11th seeded Wildcats scored once in the bottom of the second. Holbrook came back with three runs in the top of the third to take its first lead of the game. That lead held until the bottom of the fourth when Morenci took advantage of some Holbrook miscues and pushed in three runs to build a 5-4 margin.
The Wildcats tacked on another in the fifth, then scored four key runs in the bottom of the sixth to build a 10-4 cushion. In the top of the seventh Holbrook rallied, scoring four runs and had the bases loaded, threatening to regain the lead. But a double play and a strikeout put an end to the Birds’ season.
Holbrook scored eight runs on nine hits, made four errors and left five on base.
Morenci netted 10 runs on 11 hits, made three errors and left 10 stranded.
At the plate, Shawn Gillespie went one for three for Holbrook, walked once and scored twice. Jacob Baker was two for three with a walk and scored once. Jesse Spangler hit the ball well, going four for four with a double, three RBIs and scored once. Nikko Ferniza was zero for three with a walk and an RBI. Ray Searles went zero for two, but drew two walks with one RBI. Buddy Wagoner went zero for three, reaching twice on errors, stole one base and scored two runs. Freshman Trevor Barton went two for three, stole one base and scored two runs.
Spangler worked 42/3 innings on the hill, facing 26 Wildcat batters. He gave up six runs, only four earned, with six hits, eight strikeouts and four walks. Wagoner pitched a third of an inning, striking out the only batter he faced. Carlos Quintana pitched one inning, facing 11 batters. He allowed four runs, all earned, on five hits with three walks.
Holbrook finished the year with an overall mark of 13-14 and was 8-7 in power point contests.
