The performers in Loni Hatch’s Creative Rhythms Dance Studio will soon be presenting a unique modern dance performance, one inspired by a story written by two of the young performers in the group.
When Hatch decided to do an original piece for the group’s annual recital, she called upon the writing talents of Micah McClellan and her daughter, Karson Hatch, to write the story for the performance.
“It’s an adorable story. I provided them with minimal criteria except to give them a book to look at and to let them know I wanted it to be called Once Upon A Dance,” explained Hatch. The story written by Micah and Karson involves a young prince with a love for dance and how he overcomes the will of an evil woman to destroy his kingdom.
Hatch showed the story to artist Dwayne Hawk, who also designs the sets for her productions. Hawk offered to add illustrations to the story to help bring it to life. With the artwork added to the dialogue, Micah’s mother, Margaret McClellan, took the project one step further by having the story made into an actual book through an online self-publishing site. The result is a 24-page hardcover book that is available for purchase for $23 on lulu.com.
Taking the endeavor one more step, the book itself will be integrated into the dance.
“It’s really wonderful. Dwayne is also creating a giant version of the book that will be on stage, with pages that will turn,” Hatch explained.
The modern dance recital will take place at Holbrook’s George Gardner Performing Arts Center at 3 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 18.
