The Lady Roadrunners simply made too many errors in the first round of the state tournament on Thursday, and with those mistakes came the end of their season, although it took until the seventh inning before Chinle was able to outlast them to advance with a 23-22 win.
Both teams started well with Holbrook holding a 4-3 edge after the first inning. Five more Roadrunner runs in the top of the second along with four additional runs in their half of the third put the Birds on top 13-3. Chinle closed the gap quickly scoring seven runs in the home half of the third. Holbrook answered with three runs in the fourth then added another in the fifth to once again lead 17-10.
Like before, the Lady Wildcats battled back against the Lady Roadrunners scoring three runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth to lead by one heading to the seventh. Holbrook appeared to have gained the upper hand with five runs in the top of the seventh, but that lead vanished as the Wildcats caught and passed the Birds winning the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Holbrook pounded the ball throughout the game collecting 26 total hits with only four strike-outs and three walks. However, they committed 15 errors on defense giving Chinle 15 unearned runs. The Wildcats finished with 21 hits but took advantage of Holbrook’s mistakes. Tess Baldonado worked 3 and 2/3 innings giving up 12 runs with 11 hits and had two strike outs. Demo Perkins pitched the remainder of the game allowing 11 runs, on 10 hits with five strike outs and three walks.
Holbrook finished the season with an overall power point mark of 6-10. Chinle was shut out in the second round 11-0 to fifth seeded Estrella Foothills.
