A pleasant rezoning surprise was given to some Winslow residence due to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) guidelines concerning the Winslow levee.
According to Winslow City Manager Jim Ferguson, the Winslow levee is actually a county issue, however, FEMA’s guidelines were used to change the Winslow levee zoning lines. FEMA noted that the previous flood zone boundaries were actually too far west and south around the levee. By changing the zoning lines, 900 homes were moved out of the flood plain, causing those homeowners to realize a reduction in their insurance premiums. “These folks no longer had to buy flood insurance, making them very happy,” said Ferguson.
