The Winslow Bulldogs opened their 2013 football season at home last Friday night with a 47-0 victory over the Holbrook Roadrunners.
The game was close in the first quarter, but the Bulldogs took control in the second quarter and continued to earn the victory in the rain. Winslow enjoyed superb efforts from Kelly Wood, James Martinez, Henry Montiel, C.J. Chacon, Demetrius Gamez, Jace Hardy and the entire defense. The lead was sufficient to earn considerable playing time for the bench in the second half. Winslow did not have to punt until the closing minutes of the game.
The first quarter was played on even terms until the Bulldogs scored with less than two minutes to go in the period when Wood scored on a brilliant 46-yard run to complete a 95-yard drive. The other big play in the drive was a 36-yard pass from Martinez to Gamez. The conversion was blocked and Winslow took a 6-0 lead into the second period.
Martinez scored on a nine-yard run the next time the Bulldogs had the ball. They had converted a fourth and long the play before the touchdown run. Wood ran for the two-point conversation that increased the Winslow lead to 14-0 with just over seven minutes left in the half.
The Bulldogs drove 64 yards and scored on a one-yard run by Martinez. Rodney Davis booted the conversion to give Winslow a 21-0 lead with just over a minute left in the half. Amazingly, the Bulldogs scored again before the half ended when Tres Cake recovered a Roadrunner fumble in the end zone to increase the lead to 28-0. That was the score at the intermission.
Wood returned the second half kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown and a 34-0 Winslow lead after the conversion kick failed. Wood ran 48 yards to score the next time the Bulldogs had the ball, and giving Winslow a 40-0 lead as the conversion kick was blocked. Over seven minutes remained in the third quarter.
Chacon scored inside the final minute of the third quarter on a one-yard run. The conversion kick by Davis gave Winslow a commanding 47-0 lead and assured that the fourth quarter would start with a running clock.
Holbrook lost the ball on a fumble in its first possession of the fourth quarter, but Winslow, showing good sportsmanship, tried and missed a long field goal on first down. With the clock running the final period went quickly, with Winslow having only long field goal attempts and their only punt of the night.
All total, the home team amassed 460 yards of offense and limited the Birds to only 141. Holbrook was led by Lanny Newton-Pender with 71 yards on 19 totes. Shem Bowman struggled to find running room, picking up only 13 yards on seven carries. Dontae Hollins picked up 12 yards on six runs and Julian Garcia carried twice, losing two net yards. Hollins did hook up on a long catch and run with Garcia good for 42 yards. His only other completion of the night went to Bowman for five yards. The senior quarterback was two for 11 with a pair of interceptions on the night.
Defensively, Holbrook was led by Nikko Ferniza and Bowman with 13 tackles each. Newton-Pender had eight stops with two for losses. Garcia made seven tackles.
The Birds will find the going much easier tonight (Sept. 6) when they host a new school, Lee Williams of Kingman, which has just freshmen and sophomores on its roster.
The Bulldogs will have an awesome challenge tonight when the Blue Ridge Yellowjackets visit Emil Nasser Stadium. Blue Ridge has one of the most successful high school football programs in the country.
