After opening the volleyball season with a road win over Winslow last Tuesday, the Lady Roadrunners competed in the large Payson Invitational over the weekend, going 2- 3 in pool play, losing one and splitting wins in cross pool matches, then going 2-2 in double elimination bracket play on Saturday.
In Tuesday’s power point win at Winslow, Holbrook won the first two games, 25-22 and 25-13, dropped game three 22-25, then closed out the match by winning game four 25-20.
Tess Baldonado finished the match with 27 kills, two aces and 2½ blocks. Teyah Goldtooth helped with 19 kills, four aces, two digs and three blocks. Shandie Demuth added 27 assists, two digs and an ace. Alex Jeffers-Sample helped with three assists. Demi Phaturos added two assists and led the team with 12 digs. Dena Kinlicheenie helped with two aces, two kills, 14 assists and five digs. Lauren Silversmith had three kills and a dig. Mariah Cummings and Brandi Cline each had a dig. Shayna Carlson added three kills, a half a block and one assist. Terrilyn Lester added eight kills, one ace and a half a block.
Pool play format at the tournament on Friday was just one game played either to 30 points or in a 20-minute time limit. Holbrook fell to Blue Ridge 30-23 in the first game. Goldtooth led the team with six kills, and 11 digs. The Roadrunners bounced back to defeat Wickenburg 30-16 behind six kills from Baldonado and four digs from Cline. Holbrook fell to Verrado 28-27, with Baldonado and Goldtooth collecting six kills each. Holbrook then lost to Window Rock 27-24, but came back to defeat Coconino 30-26 in the final match of regular pool play. Goldtooth led in kills in that match with seven and Cline again played well on defense with five digs.
Cross-pool play matches consisted of two games to 21 or a 25-minute time limit. Holbrook lost both games to Payson, 21-18 and 21-16. The Roadrunners split games with Page, winning 21-16 then falling 14-13. They also earned a split with Ganado, losing 21-20, then winning 12-11.
In double elimination bracket play, Holbrook defeated Estrella Foothills in two games, 25-20 and 25-19. Baldonado and Goldtooth each finished with nine kills, and Kinlicheenie had 12 assists. That win advanced the Roadrunners to face Northland Prep, where they fell in two games, 25-23 and 25-15. Phaturos finished with 10 assists in the loss. Holbrook then dropped down to face Ganado, defeating the Hornets 25-18 and 25-22. Baldonado finished with 10 kills, Cummings added eight digs, Demuth had 14 assists and Goldtooth helped with 11 digs.
Holbrook closed out the tournament by losing to Coconino 25-17 and 25-22. Cummings had 11 digs, Baldonado finished with six kills and 10 digs, and Goldtooth also had six kills. Kinlicheenie and Demuth each had six assists.
Tess Baldonado was named to the All Tournament Team.
