Joseph City football coach John Bryant will be inducted into the Flowing Wells Hall of Fame in Tucson today (Sept. 20).
Coach Bryant is a 1976 graduate of Flowing Wells High School, where he played running back on the football team that won a state title in 1975. To this date that remains the school’s only state championship.
He also still holds the school’s record for the long jump with a distance of 22’11½”, which he achieved as a sophomore.
Bryant played four sports in high school, tearing his ACL as a junior, but returned to win the football title his senior year.
As a player, he and his brother were also members state runners-up basketball and football teams. “One of the best memories was of actually getting to play alongside my older brother on those teams.” said Bryant.
Having coached now for 23 years, Bryant has amassed 15 state titles in his career. He has coached at three high schools, winning a total of nine football titles, two boys’ basketball titles, two girls’ track titles, one boys’ track title and one softball title. In addition, he has coached state runner-up teams three times in football, and once each in boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball and track.
“You don’t win that many titles without having incredible athletes, which I have been fortunate to have over the years,” added Coach Bryant.
