The Lady Roadrunners closed out a busy week by going 3-3 in volleyball matches played at the Snowflake Invitational meet over the weekend.
Prior to that tournament, Holbrook played a match with much more importance at Ganado on Thursday. With power points in the balance the Roadrunners improved to 3-1 in such matches with a 3-0 win over the Hornets. Holbrook held on to win the first two games 25-23, then closed out the match by winning game three 25-18.
The Roadrunners received another strong performance from the duo of Tess Baldonado and Teyah Goldtooth, among others, in the win. Baldonado finished with three aces, 19 kills, three blocks and 14 digs. Goldtooth did her part with 12 kills, one assist and 19 digs. Shandie Demuth set up her teammates with 22 assists along with one ace and 16 digs. Alex Jeffers-Sample served two aces, and had four assists and two digs. Brandi Cline had three kills and six digs. Demi Phaturos helped with 10 digs. Dena Kinlicheenie added eight assists and five digs. Lauren Silversmith and Mariah Cummings each had two kills. Shayna Carlson had three assists and five digs.
Holbrook went 2-1 in Friday’s pool play action at Snowflake with a 2-0 win over Bradshaw Mountain, 25-13 and 25-17. The Roadrunners also got past Mountain View in two games, 25-19 and 25-15. Their loss came against a powerful Monument Valley team, 25-6 and 25-20.
Saturday’s bracket action saw Holbrook lose to Snowflake, 25-15 and 25-18. That loss put the Roadrunners up against Winslow, which they defeated 2-1, losing the first game 20-25, but winning game two 25-11 and game three 15-7. Holbrook closed out the tournament with a close loss to Bradshaw Mountain 25-20, 22-25 and 15-13.
Combining all six games, Baldonado compiled 71 kills, served four aces, and had 12 blocks, two assists and 60 digs. Goldtooth had 42 kills, five aces, 2.5 blocks, one assist and 56 digs. Demuth had nine kills, five aces, 37 digs and 74 assists. Kinlicheenie added 39 assists, 18 digs, one kill and three aces. Phaturos had 45 digs, one ace and one kill. Jeffers-Sample added six kills, three aces, one block and 12 digs. Ashley Attakai had four kills, two assists and 10 digs. Cline had one kill and 18 digs. Silversmith had two kills, 11 digs and one ace. Cummings had three kills and four digs. Carlson had four kills, eight assists and eight digs.
Another busy week lies ahead for Holbrook. After hosting Show Low on Tuesday, the team travels to Lakeside to face Blue Ridge on Thursday, Sept. 26, then will play at Chinle on Saturday, Sept. 28. On Tuesday, Oct. 1, the Roadrunners host Hopi.
