Facing a tough Show Low soccer team in very windy conditions last Thursday, the Roadrunners took an early lead when Theron Johns scored in the first minutes of the match, but in the end the Cougars won 6-2.
Show Low tied the score about 12 minutes later, then took the lead just before the half by capitalizing on a keeper mistake by Holbrook. Both teams played well in the first half, though each missed on scoring opportunities.
In the second half the Cougars took advantage of more opportunities, finding the nets four times. The Birds scored just once in the second half, coming off the foot of Alec Smith with an assist from Johns. Carlos Quintana made several fine saves to keep Holbrook in the match, finishing with 12. James Ramirez played in the nets the second half and also played well with nine saves.
With the loss Holbrook fell to 2-6-1 on the season. After hosting Round Valley on Tuesday, the Birds will play at St. Michaels on Thursday, Oct. 3, then will host Snowflake on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
Holbrook won the junior varsity contest, defeating the young Cougars 3-0. Jimmie Saxton pitched the shutout as keeper, and goals came twice from Alec Smith and once from James Ramirez.
