Holbrook’s Lady Roadrunners split their volleyball matches last week, losing to Blue Ridge on Thursday, then handily defeating Chinle on Saturday.
The Birds won the first game of the match with a good Blue Ridge team, but dropped the next three, losing to the highly ranked Lady Yellowjackets 3-1.
Holbrook played very well in the first game, taking it 25-18. After Blue Ridge made some adjustments, the Jackets quickly took care of the Birds in the next two games, winning both 25-10. Game four was a little closer, but Holbrook came up just short of forcing a fifth game with a 25-22 loss.
Tess Baldonado finished with just 11 kills, well under her usual number. She also had three blocks, one assist and eight digs. Teyah Goldtooth had only seven kills, but served two aces, had an assist and played well defensively, leading the team with 23 digs. Shandie Demuth finished with one kill, an ace, a block, nine digs and set up her teammates with 19 assists. Ashley Attakai added four kills and four digs. Demi Phaturos had 10 digs. Dena Kinlicheenie finished with two aces, one kill, 10 assists and eight digs. Mariah Cummings and Shayna Carlson each added a dig. Terrilyn Lester continues to recover from injury, but had nine kills, one assist and two digs.
The Roadrunners bounced back from the Blue Ridge loss by sweeping Chinle in three straight games. This marked the second win over the Wildcats in as many tries this year, earning Holbrook valuable power points in the rankings.
The two hour trip had little effect on the Birds as they took the first game 25-17, won the second 25-12 and finished off the match by winning game three 25-16.
Baldonado finished with 19 kills, served four aces and had eight digs. Goldtooth added seven kills, served two aces, had one assist and again played well on defense with 16 digs. Demuth helped with two kills, served one ace, set up 12 assists and had 13 digs. Alex Jeffers-Sample added one kill, served four aces, had one assist and seven digs. Phaturos had two assists and six digs. Kinlicheenie played a well rounded match, serving three aces along with 12 assists and five digs. Carlson added one kill along with six assists and two digs. Lester finished with six kills. Brandi Cline served one ace and had four digs.
