Competing at the recent Region 1 Chess Tournament in Hopi, the Roadrunners of Holbrook High School fared well, finishing in third place overall.
Holbrook started off the tournament by taking down the number one team, Tuba City, 3-2. The Holbrook team then took care of Kingman, 4-1.
Day two of the tournament saw Holbrook lose to Blue Ridge, 3-2, and to Alchesay, 4-1.
Holbrook got exceptional play in the tournament from senior Justin Tapaha, who earned the best board medal for second board. He won three of his four matches. Bryant Martin also earned wins in three of four matches, but lost his medal on the tiebreaker system. Edmund Jody placed fourth among 22 alternate players.
