Based on the power point standings heading into this week’s action 13th ranked Holbrook played host to second ranked Snowflake Tuesday night at Muñoz Gym.
With the level of play from both teams in the first game, it appeared the two should have been ranked more closely together. Both teams played well, with neither gaining more than a five-point lead at any point in the game. In the end the Lady Lobos pulled ahead to win game one 26-24.
The second game didn’t stay as close for long. Snowflake’s outside hitting started to take control and the Lobos picked up momentum, winning game two 25-15.
The Lady Roadrunners tried to mount a challenge in game three and stayed close for a while, but again the outside hitting of the Lobos was impressive, allowing Snowflake to win game three 25-17 and the match 3-0.
Holbrook finished the match with 32 kills led by Tess Baldonado with 12. Teyah Goldtooth had eight; Terrilyn Lester, four; Shandie Demuth and Alex Jeffers-Sample, three each; Shayna Carlson and Mariah Cummings, one each. Demuth led the team in assists with 15. Carlson added four and Goldtooth had one. Goldtooth also served the only ace in the match for Holbrook.
Goldtooth led the team in digs with 18, followed by Demuth with 15; Demi Phaturos, 11; Baldonado, nine; Brandi Cline and Dena Kinlicheenie, four each; Cummings and Jeffers-Sample, two each; and Lester and Carlson, one each. Baldonado, Goldtooth and Carlson each had one block.
The Roadrunners’ schedule is tough for the next few matches as they face three very good teams from the North. They will host Monument Valley on Saturday, Oct. 12, then travel to Window Rock on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Both those teams are expected to advance to the state tournament. After taking some time off following the trip to Window Rock, the Roadrunners will play at Tuba City on Thursday, Oct. 24.
