Firefighters from Joseph City, Holbrook, Winslow and Puerco Valley completed a heavy rescue extrication class held Oct. 5 in Winslow.
The firefighters were trained on several tactics used to remove trapped patients from vehicles including semi-trucks and passenger vehicles. Various situations were presented to crews that required the use of specialized equipment including pneumatic air lifting bags, stabilizing struts, and cribbing that allows large vehicles to be lifted and stabilized, allowing access to areas otherwise not accessible by normal means of extrication.
This training was made possible by the co-operation of the Interstate 40 Fire Chiefs with instruction provided by L.N. Curtis and Sons. Tri-R Towing in Winslow provided the vehicles and trucks at no charge along with the use of its equipment and wrecking yard for the class.
Firefighters on the I-40 corridor are now better equipped with the knowledge of heavy vehicle dynamics and the equipment/tactics available to utilize when an incident occurs.
The I-40 Fire Chiefs offered their thanks to Tri R Towing and Winslow Ford for being in attendance and working closely to make this training a success.
