Holbrook’s chess team qualified for the state tournament after finishing third at the qualifying match held in Kingman.
After losing out to Blue Ridge 3-2 in the early stages Holbrook needed to place at least third to advance to the state matches. At the beginning of round two Holbrook found itself knotted with Alchesay, with both vying for the final spot. Playing each other in the second round did little to resolve the issue when the Falcons and Roadrunners tied their match with each winning 2½ points. In rounds three and four Holbrook defeated Hopi and Tuba City, which gave the Roadrunners second place for the tournament and placed them in the third position in the region to earn the trip to state.
Senior Aarick Yazzie took best first board for the tournament with four straight wins. Yazzie defeated the best players from Blue Ridge, Alchesay, Hopi and Tuba City. The win marked Holbrook’s first best board win in more than three years.
In the alternate tournament Raymus Franklin took second place with four wins and no losses. Edmund Jodie placed fifth with a 3-1 mark.
Blue Ridge, Tuba City and Holbrook all advanced to the state tournament, and will be representing the Northern Arizona Region when the state meet gets underway Nov. 1 and 2 at Catalina Foothills in Tucson.
