The Winslow High School volleyball team has won three of its last five matches after a slow start in the earlier part of the season.
The highlight match of the season was played at Winslow last Thursday when the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Window Rock Lady Scouts three games to one.
That match followed the loss of two matches to an exceptionally good Monument Valley Lady Mustang team at Kayenta on Oct. 19. Monument Valley won both of those matches 3-0.
The Bulldogs had beaten Camp Verde 3-0 on Oct. 16 and Chinle 3-0 on Oct. 15 prior to the Monument Valley losses. Under the power point system, the win over Window Rock, which had been rated ahead of Winslow, should have improved the Bulldogs’ chances of earning a playoff berth.
A key to the playoff possibilities may be the matches at the end of the season at Holbrook on Tuesday against a Lady Roadrunner team that had beaten Winslow 3-1 in the season opener and 2-0 later. Like Window Rock, the Roadrunners are rated ahead of Winslow for a playoff berth.
Tonight (Oct. 30), the Lady Bulldogs will journey to Show Low for a regular season ending match against the Lady Cougars. There was only one game in the regular season between those two teams, which was won by Show Low. Wins against both Holbrook and Show Low could result in Winslow making the playoffs. With a split, it is likely the Bulldogs would be dependent upon help from other results to reach the playoffs.
First-year Coach Nathan Brady said that he is pleased with the way the girls have been playing and responding to coaching. He said that he has a talented team, which could be dangerous in the playoffs after much improvement during the season.
The roster includes seniors Katonya Begay, Jalicia Brown, Tannon Tom, Marcella Joe and Kayla Brady, juniors Ashleigh Johnson, Liz Lozano, Tomiko Clough, Shandiin Armao, Richelyn Villanueva and Kaelynn Bitsoi, and freshman Jenabah Yazzie.
