The Holbrook Roadrunners finished the soccer season with a tie with Payson and a loss to a tough Show Low squad.
In their second to last match of the season, Holbrook hosted the Payson Longhorns in what proved to be a tightly contested match.
The Roadrunners opened the scoring as Jon Marvin skillfully headed a ball into the nets to give Holbrook a 1-0 lead. Payson equalized the score two minutes later.
Theron John then ripped a low liner in the goal three minutes later, putting Holbrook up 2-1. Payson finished the half strong, scoring two unanswered goals to lead 3-2 after 40 minutes of play.
In the second half, Holbrook tied the score as Alec Smith laced a ball in the far low corner. Payson answered again. Time was running out on the Roadrunners as they mounted attack after attack only to be unsuccessful.
Finally, with five minutes left in the game, Alec Smith drilled his second goal of the game to even the score at four a piece.
Eighty minutes of back and forth play resulted in a tied match resulting in two 10-minute overtime periods.
In the first 10 minutes freshman Joe Brown scored off a corner that rebounded off the Payson keeper to put Holbrook up 5-4.
In the second overtime, Payson scored its fifth goal and tied the game at 5-5, which was the final result.
Both teams played hard over the 100 minutes of intense soccer, but the end result was a tie.
Holbrook’s final match of the season was Senior Night against Show Low.
Both teams threatened to score only to be turned back by some fine defensive play. Sweeper Micah McClellan, and defenders Jonathan Dawson, Trevor Barton and Angel Benitez, along with midfielders Brandon Kester, Jordan Smith and Jon Marvin, helped freshman keeper Jimmy Saxton shut out the powerful Cougars at the half-way mark.
The second half continued with more of the same. With 13 minutes left in the game Show Low scored over a deflection. A minute later a second deflection put Show Low up 2-0. Two minutes later the Cougars scored again. After 67 scoreless minutes of soccer the next three minutes resulted in three goals. The wind was out of the Roadrunners’ sails and a fourth and final goal ended the game and their season.
Miguel Martinez was honored at halftime as the sole senior playing this year for Holbrook.
“Miguel played all four of his high school years on the soccer team,” said Coach Dave Wright.
“The team was disappointed in this loss, but I was pleased with their improved performance. Next year bodes well for us, as the JV team was undefeated and the entire team, minus Miguel Martinez, returns.”
