Holbrook entered the Division III state volleyball tournament as the 13th seeded team and met up with fourth ranked Monument Valley in the opening round last Friday afternoon. The Mustangs took game one 25-19, and quickly took advantage of that momentum, winning the second game 25-11. Needing to win game three to extend the season Holbrook played better, but fell short, dropping the third and final game 25-22.
Tess Baldonado finished her final high school match with 16 kills, two aces, four blocks and nine digs. Classmate Shandie Demuth wrapped up a solid career with 19 assists, 14 digs, one block and one kill. Teyah Goldtooth added three kills, served two aces, had 12 digs and one assist. Terrilyn Lester finished with four kills, and four digs. Shayna Carlson added two kills, one block, seven digs and three assists. Ashley Attakai had one kill. Mariah Cummings served three aces, and had one block, seven digs and one assist. Demi Phaturos helped with six digs. Alex Jeffers-Sample had two digs. Dena Kinlicheenie finished with one ace, and had four digs and two assists.
All in all the Lady Roadrunners put together a solid season. After failing to make the post-season in Division IV last year, Holbrook was placed into a higher and much tougher division this season and qualified for post-season play.
With only two seniors on the roster, Coach Leslie Baldonado has an experienced team returning next year, although daughter Tess Baldonado, the leading hitter, and Shandie Demuth, the team’s leading setter, will both have to be replaced.
Holbrook finished the season with a power point match record of 12-6 including the post-season loss. Monument Valley was defeated in the second round by eventual state runner-up Cactus last Friday night.
