A Hopi High School football player died Monday night after sustaining a traumatic head injury during a football game. Charles Youvella, a senior at Hopi High School, played running back and defense for the Hopi Bruins as they played in the Division V first round playoff game against Arizona Lutheran Academy on Nov. 9.
According to an article in The Arizona Republic, Charles scored the only touchdown for his team in the 60-6 game and on defense sacked a quarterback before being tackled later in the fourth quarter, striking his head hard against to the ground. Charles continued for two more plays before collapsing on the field. He was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix in critical condition, where he died two days later.
He was the second-leading rusher on the Hopi team that had its best regular season record (9-1) in school history.
