With news of the devastation done by Super Typhoon Haiyan as it tore through the Philippines, concerns have risen for friends and family who may have been on the islands. For many in Holbrook, one of those people is Sister Mary Bernard Derayunan, a Good Shepherd Sister.
Sister Bernard was born in the Philippines and returned there after retiring as director of Good Shepherd Center in Holbrook in June of this year.
According to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gallup, Sister Bernard and her immediate sisters were unharmed during the massive storm and were able to move to a safe location. No word has been received regarding her immediate family.
The typhoon, which struck Nov. 8, left thousands of people dead or injured, and even more with nowhere to go for clean water, food and medical care, has been declared the most powerful ever to reach land.
