With football and volleyball seasons officially in the books for Holbrook High School, the winter sports season now takes over. Both of Holbrook’s basketball teams have been going through workouts, with coaches making final selections last week.
The Roadrunners, under the direction of Raul Mendoza, are looking to bounce back from a subpar season with just nine wins.
Coach Mendoza will be leaning on seniors Kyle Chee, Dontae Hollins, Andon Hatch, Casey Nelson, Kendrick Nez and Triston Zahne to lead the way. They are joined by juniors Sylas Cheverillo, Kelsey Foster, Marlin Martin and Marcel Young. Sophomores Miireaux Begaii and Abrain Dickson round out the varsity roster.
Those playing junior varsity under the direction of Coach Delmar Johnson include juniors Toriano Begay, Marcos Clark, Quinlan Keoni and Ryan Keyonnie, and sophomores Benson Davis, Rhett Desiderio, Nathan Johnson and Brandon Kester.
Freshmen playing under Coach Don Tyler are Triston Baldonado, Alonzo Begay, Oscar Hernandez, Kody Joe, Jayden Johns, Tully Kelly, Hayden Kinlichee, Isaac Madrid, Nachae Nez, Elliot Pete and Colby Ruiz.
The Roadrunners will travel to Window Rock on Thursday, Nov. 21, for a pre-season scrimmage with the Scouts. They will open regular season play on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Show Low. Holbrook then plays in the Rain and Drain Tournament in Tempe during the Thanksgiving break. The first home game will be on Tuesday, Dec. 3, when the Birds welcome Chinle.
For the Lady Roadrunners, Coach Greg Perkins and his assistants, Claude Bakurza and Frank Stacey, have trimmed a large tryout contingent down to 31 players for the upcoming season.
Freshmen on the roster include Vanessa Bonney, Lafrenda Yazzie, Mikayla Johnson, Shoshawnna Jack, Taye Wilson, Kiara Yellowhair, Ariyanna Pratt, Alishea Kee, Kimberlynn Nez, Sun Rae Nez, Celestina Kinlicheenie and Adriana Monroe. They are joined by sophomores Darian Hollins, Tanisha Yazzie, Morgan Zahne, Quanyyah Lester, Quannah Gardipee, Laurie Brown and Maegan Bia.
A large junior class includes Dena Kinlicheenie, Rochelle Nez, Glenda Tsosie, Sheraye Sells, Teyah Goldtooth, Mariah Cummings, Cheyenne Lester, Tilly Kelly, Shinaya Wagner and Summer Olney. Seniors on the team are Shandie Demuth and Tamara Yazzie.
Holbrook is coming off its first final four appearance in more than 20 years, but has to replace several quality players lost to graduation.
The Lady Roadrunners will host St. Johns and Alchesay in a three-team scrimmage at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Alchesay and St. Johns are slated to scrimmage three quarters, followed by Holbrook and Alchesay for three quarters. St. Johns and Holbrook will then play three quarters to end the evening.
Like the boys’ team, the Lady Roadrunners open the season officially on Tuesday at Show Low. They will then have a week off to prepare for the home opener against Chinle on Dec. 3. Holbrook will play in the Round Valley Tournament Dec. 5-7, then return home to host defending state champion Winslow on Dec. 10.
