The Bulldogs opened their 2014 basketball season with a 57-41 victory over the Page Sand Devils in a game played Nov. 26 in Winslow. The game was the first of the season for both teams.
The Bulldogs took a 10-7 lead in the closing seconds of the first quarter, then sped to a comfortable 27-14 margin at the half. The third quarter was played on nearly equal terms with the Bulldogs holding a 40-26 advantage entering the final period.
Jamal Thomas of Page led all scorers with 20 points including nine of 14 free throws and three three-point shots. Collin Knight followed with 11 points, but only three other Sand Devils scored.
Stevin Nelson led Winslow with 14 points. Kennan Keams added 12 points. Eleven Bulldogs scored and balanced scoring proved key to the victory.
Winslow had a huge 19 to seven advantage in two-point goals and both teams had three three-point baskets. Page had an advantage at the charity stripe, converting 18 of 25 free throws, while Winslow made 10 of 15 charity tosses.
