After competing in the Rain and Drain Tournament last Friday and Saturday in Tempe, the Holbrook Roadrunners came home with an even mark of 2-2.
Entering the tournament on the heels of the season opening road win at Show Low, the Birds suffered their first loss of the season to Youngkers, 45-35. The Rough Riders, who play in Division II, used their size advantage to build an eight-point halftime edge. Holbrook stayed closer in the second half, but came up short.
Abrian Dickson led Holbrook with 11 points. Kyle Chee added 9, followed by Marcel Young and Marlin Martin with 4 each; Casey Nelson, 3; and Andon Hatch and Kelsey Foster, 2 each.
Holbrook made six three-point shots, with half coming from Dickson.
The Roadrunners’ second game on Friday was also against a larger school, Division II Higley. The teams played even through the first 20 minutes of a running clock. Under the unusual tournament format the Birds were knotted with the Knights at 27-27. In the second half, Martin netted eight of his team high 17 points and Hatch connected on two treys, helping Holbrook to the 55-51 victory.
Along with Martin’s 17, Miireux Begaii added 13; Hatch, 10; Chee, 6; Dickson, 5; and Foster and Triston Zahne, 2 each.
Their third game of pool play came on Saturday morning, resulting in a 12-point win over Division IV Catalina Magnet. The Holbrook squad jumped out early, building a 10-point halftime lead over the Trojans. Hatch led the first half attack, knocking down five of his six three-point shots in the first 20 minutes. In the second half Begaii netted six, while Hatch and Chee each scored from behind the arc to pace the Roadrunners to a 57-45 win.
Hatch finished with a game high 20 points. Chee added 11; Begaii, 8; Dickson, 6; Martin, 4; Zahne and Nelson, 3 each; and Kendrick Nez, 2.
The Roadrunners opened bracket play on Saturday afternoon matched up with the Bulldogs from Arizona Charter Academy, yet another Division II. Playing with modified timing and scoring, Holbrook battled to a 24-24 half time tie. Chee dropped in 13 first half points, including three buckets from distance. He added nine more points in the second half, but Holbrook came up just short, losing 51-47 to exit the tournament.
Chee finished with 22 points. Martin added 10; Hatch, 6; Begaii, 4; Nelson 3; and Dickson, 2.
Holbrook headed into this week’s action with an overall mark of 3-2. After hosting Chinle on Tuesday night, the Roadrunners are scheduled to compete in the Chinle Tournament Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 5-7. On Tuesday, Dec. 10, they welcome in Winslow for their final home game prior to the Christmas break.
