Two area cowboys are celebrating after taking home the big prize as winners of the XIII World Series of Team Roping (WSTR) Cactus Saddlery last week in Las Vegas, Nev. The roping team of Kiley Reidhead of Holbrook and Gordon L. Nikolaus Jr. of Snowflake took home a $230,000 purse for their hard work.
The two men have teamed up in the past, making it to the World Series six years ago, but this was the first purse they’ve won at the event. Reidhead and Nikolaus have known each other since high school and have ridden together quite often.
“I’ve been roping with my grandpa and my dad all my life, and I’ve known Gordy since high school, so we’ve been doing this awhile,” stated Reidhead
The men competed against 450 other teams before making it into the finals.
“On Monday morning Gordy woke up sick from something he ate, but said he’d be able to do it. We roped three steers that time with the best time. Then on Wednesday we roped the fourth,” explained Reidhead. “I had a good feeling about it when we went in, but you never know until that rope goes whether or not you’ve made it; it was pretty exciting.”
Neither is sure how he wants to spend his winnings, but Reidhead is hoping to pay off his ranch and plans to continue doing the work he loves with a lot less debt.
