The Winslow Bulldogs won two games and lost one in the Pepsi Invitational tournament held last weekend in Flagstaff. The Bulldogs bested the Kingman Bulldogs 57-36 in their opening game on Thursday. They lost to the Copper Canyon Aztecs 58-46 on Friday, and topped the Coconino Panthers 57-52 in their final game on Saturday. The results left Winslow with a record of 8-4 for the season.
In the 57-36 win over Kingman, Winslow led 17-12 after the first quarter and a commanding 30-16 at the half. The margin was 48-31 after three quarters.
Stevin Nelson led all scorers with 22 points for Winslow. Keenan Keams followed with 10 points.
Ethan Adams with 12 points and Claylee Comins with 10 points led Kingman.
In the 58-46 loss to Copper Canyon, the Aztecs led 11-10 after the first quarter and 23-20 at the half. The margin was a still close 40-34 after three quarters, but Copper Canyon hit seven of 10 free throws in the fourth period to pull away. The Aztecs converted 15 of 26 charity shots in the game, while Winslow made seven of just 11.
Trey McCray of Copper Canyon led all scorers with 16 points and Dontay Hamilton scored 12 for the Aztecs.
Trelonnie Sanders paced the Bulldogs with 14 points, followed by Trevor Begay with 11 points and Vincenzio Sells with 9.
In the 57-52 win over Coconino, the Bulldogs trailed 18-4 after the first quarter and 27-16 at the half. Coconino still led 44-31 after three quarters, but the Bulldogs came back with a 19-7 advantage in the fourth quarter to force a tie and outscored the Panthers 6-1 in overtime period to earn the win.
Milland Thomas led the Bulldogs and all scorers with 19 points. Sanders added 14.
Donovan Warren led Coconino with 14 points, followed by Matthew Begay with 11.
Free throw shooting in the overtime period was key to the Winslow win. The Bulldogs converted eight of 10 charities in that period while Coconino made one of two. For the game, Winslow was eight of 15 while Coconino was 11 of 19.
The Bulldogs were slated to play the Wildcats on Tuesday at Chinle. They will complete the 2013 portion of their season in the Tournament of Champions scheduled Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 26-28, in Chinle.
