After going three and one and claiming the consolation crown at the Pepsi Tournament held over the weekend in Flagstaff, the Lobos now have an overall record of 10-3 as they head toward the holiday break.
Prior to the tournament, Snowflake hosted Blue Ridge in a regular season match up on Tuesday. The Yellowjackets are expected to be strong contenders for the section crown this year, but the Lobos showed they, too, will be in contention as they posted a 69-50 win over the visitors.
Snowflake got a balanced attack on offense and played solid defense to get the crucial win over Blue Ridge. Kurt Wood led the team in scoring with 15 points. Dallin Fusselman added 12; Rick Shumway, 10; Ty Reidhead, 8; Travis Flake and Kegan Kay, 7 each; Luke Lewis, 6; and Jordan Gardner, 4.
Snowflake fell to a solid Durango, Colo., team 51-39 in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday at Flagstaff High School.
The Lobos bounced back with a 61-41 win over El Capitan on Friday. Kay led the offense with 13 points, followed by Shumway and Flake with 9 each, and Gardner with 8.
On Saturday Snowflake met up with River Valley and extracted a bit of revenge from the football season with a 57-20 pounding of the Dust Devils. Fusselman led with 11 points, Shumway added 7 and Kay scored 6.
In their final game on Saturday. the Lobos claimed the consolation championship with a 67-56 win over Grand Canyon. Shumway has returned in fine form from a football injury and led the team with 18 points. Kurt Wood added 14 and Jordan Gardner, 8.
The Lobos were slated to play host to Window Rock on Monday, their final game before the holiday break. They will return to action the first week in January with three straight road games. They play at Payson on Jan. 3, at Holbrook on Jan 7 and will travel to Sedona on Jan. 9.
