The Roadrunners used a well balanced offensive attack to take down Valley Sanders 63-41 on the road Tuesday night. Fans were certainly treated to end to end action as the teams moved up and down the floor at break neck speed.
Holbrook made the most of Valley’s porous defense on numerous occasions, building a 30-16 halftime lead. Four three-point shots from the Birds, two from Marlin Martin, and one each from Dontae Hollins and Triston Zahne, in just the second period helped Holbrook double up the Pirates in that frame.
The third quarter was a shootout as the teams combined for 36 points. Holbrook came out the better, adding four points to its lead. In the fourth the Roadrunners slowed the pace and made the Pirates work on defense, which was not their strong point. In the end Holbrook stayed comfortably in front to secure the 63-41 road win.
Several players contributed in the scoring column as the Roadrunners shuffled in and out throughout the game. Martin led the offense with 10 points, followed by Abrian Dickson, Andon Hatch, Kyle Chee and Miireux Begaii with 8 each; Hollins, 7; Marcel Young, 6; Zahne, 5; and Casey Nelson, 3.
The Birds finished the night with nine three-point field goals and went six for 10 at the line.
Valley was led by Marlod Matt with 15 points. Apollo Smith added 10; Zac Shirley, 5; Towayson Yazzie, 4; Trenton Barley, 3; and Shon Begaye and Darryle Nelson, 2 each.
The Pirates made nine of 11 charity tosses and hit two treys.
With the win Holbrook improves to 6-5 on the season. After hosting Ganado today (Dec. 20), they will be off until Thursday, Dec. 26) when they open play in the Chinle Tournament, which runs through Dec. 28. Today’s action begins at noon, with all six games being played at Tony Muñoz Gym. The freshmen girls begin at noon, followed by freshmen boys, junior varsity girls, jayvee boys, varsity girls, then varsity boys.
