The First Lego League (FLL) regional competition was held Dec. 7 at Bonnie Brennan Elementary School in Winslow. There were 18 teams competing from the area, including 10 from Bonnie Brennan, one of which won the competition, and one from Winslow Junior High School.
This year’s theme was Nature’s Fury, and there were three areas of competition. The first was the Robot Challenge, where teams make a robot out of Legos, download movement information into its NXT Mindstorm “brain” and complete missions. The second was The Project, where teams had to solve a real world problem dealing with the theme Nature’s Fury. Teams researched the problem, the community it affected, interviewed experts, designed a solution and presented it to adults before the competition. The third phase of the competition was a presentation about FLL’s Core Values.
First place went to the Thunder Dawgs, which included Bonnie Brennan fifth and sixth graders. Second place went to Sedona Vortex. Third place went to the Nerd Herd, which included Bonnie Brennan sixth graders.
Those three teams went on to compete at the state tournament held Dec. 14 at Arizona State University. At the state tournament, the Nerd Herd won 24th place in a field of 56 teams; and the Thunder Dawgs, 44th place.

Their coach, Steve Brodt (back), explained that the team chose to make its project about blizzards and how the snow blocked the train signal lights, causing dangerous conditions and delays for the railroad. The team added a heater with a fan to the block signal to melt the snow along with a thermostat to control when it comes on, and a moisture sensor so it won’t come on when it’s dry outside.
